What Families Are Saying…
“KLU Community Learning Center continues to be a favorite place for my grandson and me to spend time every week. The staff and other volunteers show genuine love and concern for each person who attends the programs and community events. KLU concentrates on possibilities, not disabilities. Volunteering gives me the opportunity to be part of a nurturing support network that makes a positive difference in the lives of special-needs kids, young adults, and their families. Every child is given opportunities to make new friends, to practice and develop social skills, learn new skills, and develop personal interests. And… there's a lot of FUN along with the learning (I overheard a parent saying this about her daughter: 'She's always smiling when she's there!’)”

“Our family loves and appreciates the Kids Like Us Center. It is one of only a few places we have been with our two autistic grandchildren that is totally accepting of them. Also, there are absolutely no expectations of the children from anyone attending: parents, friends, grandparents, visitors, employees, and volunteers. Everyone is accepting of each other. Having selective mutism (anxiety), autism, and auditory processing disorder, there are no tears EVER shed by my children at this facility. Only calm, happy times. Our Lili has been taught a lot of cooking skills there, as well as art projects and playing with her favorite: kinetic sand! We would be lost without the KLU Center!”

“In the years I have been attending KLU, I have enjoyed the times with friends --playing UNO, learning to cook, painting, bicycling, learning cool things in science, and helping others. Ms. Lisa and her volunteers have always been friendly, caring, and encouraging. This year I have been helping to set up new rooms and setting up computers for kids to use. I plan to continue volunteering at KLU while I am studying Computer Information Technology at TCAT in Elizabethon this fall. After I finish the CIT program, I am looking forward to working at KLU as an IT Administrator.”
